Pict-O-Stat:Violence

Development of Pict-O-Stat:Violence is focusing on experience of violence, persons with intellectual disability and a survey questionnaire that can be completed by the individuals themselves

Pict-O-Stat:Violence is a result of a cowork between Kerstin Kristensen at KvinnofridsAkademin and Ingalill Fahlström/Lars Careliusson at Neonova, The goal was to develop a Swedish survey instrument to collect data on violence experiences where the respondents are individuals with mild or moderate intellectual disability.

Independency

The main objectives were to ensure that individuals independently can understand and respond to questions about exposure to violence, and that the questions should facilitate the comparison of the results with those from other Swedish studies of the prevalence of violence.

It is known that people without an intellectual disability are subjected to violence, and it is unlikely that people with an intellectual disability would differ in this respect. The differentiating circumstance for the latter group is that they are often dependent on others in their daily life; they can also find it difficult to comprehend what violence is, and how to avoid it. It is therefore important to identify when risk is high to be subjected to violence, i.e. in which context and by whom. Dependency is an important issue as it increases vulnerability. It must therefore be taken into account that people with an intellectual disability can be subjected to violence, not only by partners and ex-partners, but also by other people such as carers, acquaintances, colleagues, family members etc. In short, by any person within the dependency circle.

In addition there is a need for questions about disability specific experience of violence, such as when the perpetrator uses the disability itself as a means of violence, or uses disability aids.

The importance of the data collection method

Information is needed on both prevalence and the consequences of violence in order to give appropriate and adequate support to victims. To achieve this, the collection method of violence experiences must be adapted to needs of different groups, so that no groups are excluded from the research. Excluding a certain group, for example people with an intellectual disability, means that they cannot contribute with their experience and ultimately will they not be able to participate and influence the support that right they may need.

The work were presented with a poster at the world conference; IASSID i 15-18 august 2016 in Melbourne

and got an Award för outstanding poster presentation.

Kerstin Kristensen published an article about the work: Development of Pict-O-Stat: violence - focus on experiences of violence and a survey that can be completed by the individuals themselves' in The Journal of Adult Protection (2017)
